The Central Park Conservancy selected Graciano Corporation to bring the Naumburg Bandshell back to life. This Neoclassical 1923 structure occupies a prominent spot on the park’s Mall. After decades of concerts, a large part of the masonry, fixtures and interior features were damaged or missing, and the exterior had been overpainted repeatedly to conceal graffiti.

Graciano project managers and artisans took the lead, completing a challenging slate of tasks that included:

• Selectivelydemolishing the façade
• Performingexcavation and site work to facilitate subsurface repair and waterproofing
• Cleaningand restoring exterior masonry
• Replacingthe roof and waterproofing the dome
• Furnishingand installing new precast concrete panels and coping
  • Cleaning and repairing the limestone-masonry and cast-stone ceiling
  • Reconstructing the stage, façade, proscenium arch and cornice
  • Repairing the limestone stairs
  • Renovating interior spaces
  • Restoring skylights
• Furnishingand installing new doors
  • Replacing and improving interior and exterior lighting

Project manager Nick Foglio describes some project highlights:

“Cleaning was first on the list, “and really one of the biggest jobs. Graffiti artists had been tagging the walls for decades, and spray paint is no picnic to remove—especially if you want to bring back the original surface. We worked closely with Brooklyn-based Integrated Conservation Resources, Inc., the project’s architectural conservator, on the cleaning.”

“Color matching was another concern. With spalling on the original limestone, we took extra care to blend the new materials with the old. It was an exacting process; we made hundreds of patches, and every area of the building is a slightly different shade of buff. It took time to find the right recipe for each spot.” 

The dome’s honeycomb ceiling was in poor condition, “so we removed all of those rectangular cast-stone units, salvaging what we could. Then we sent a panel to the cast-stone manufacturer, who compared color-match samples with us before replicating the original pieces.”

The curved stairs that flank the stage required close attention to detail. “We disassembled the steps, installed a waterproofing membrane, and then reassembled them. Where the original pieces were too far gone, we substituted cast stone. The dimensions and the radius had to be absolutely correct—no room for error. Taking the measurements and conveying them to the fabricator was an intricate little project in itself.”

The results were well received. Mr. Foglio notes, “I believe we brought much life back to this special area of the park that so many enjoy.”
